Does breast cancer only occur in women with larger breasts? Oncologist debunks myths

New Delhi: Breast cancer starts in one’s breast and can lead to higher morbidity and mortality rates in women. A large number of women are unaware of this cancer, suffer in silence, and fail to seek timely treatment due to the myths and taboos related to it. This article focuses on educating women regarding breast cancer so that they can report it to the doctor without any delay.

While talking about some of the most common myths associated with breast cancer, which is also the most common form of the disease reported in women in metropolitan India, Dr. Tejal Gorasia, Surgical Oncologist (Breast and Gynaec) Medical Director at Onco Life Cancer Care Centre, Chiplun, listed the following and stated the facts as well.

Myth 1: Breast cancer is only seen in women with bigger breasts
Fact: This statement is false! Women with bigger breasts shouldn’t panic as there is no association between breast size and cancer risk. Don’t believe in any rumors or false information circulated on social media. It is essential to consult an expert in case you have any doubts.

Myth 2: Only older women suffer from breast cancer
Fact: Earlier, breast cancer was majorly seen in women aged 50-65. Now, women in their 30s and 40s are also coming with breast cancer due to various factors such as genetics and family history. Hence, every woman after 25 is advised breast self-examination and regular yearly mammograms after 40. Don’t ignore symptoms such as breast pain and tenderness, lump, nipple changes, and abnormal blood discharge from the breast, and seek a timely diagnosis to confirm breast cancer. Initiate timely treatment after the confirmed diagnosis.

Myth 3: Wearing an underwire bra causes breast cancer
Fact: No, not at all! Remember, bras or any other clothing do not cause breast cancer. It is believed that wearing a bra, especially an underwire style, may restrict the flow of lymph fluid out of the breast, causing the build-up of toxic substances in the breast tissue. However, there is no connection between an underwire bra and breast cancer.

Myth 4: Having lumps will indicate breast cancer
Fact: Are you aware? Many breast lumps are non-cancerous and one may be able to deal with it effectively with the help of an expert. Get the lump examined by the doctor to confirm the nature of the lump whether it is benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous).

Myth 5: Using an antiperspirant or deodorant invites breast cancer
Fact: Aluminum and parabens present in these products are believed to cause breast cancer. However, there is no evidence available regarding antiperspirant or deodorant causing breast cancer.
