Women's T20 World Cup: West Indies beat England, beat South Africa in semi-finals

DUBAI Dubai: West Indies ousted England from the Women's T20 World Cup with a six-wicket win in Dubai, sealing their place in the semi-finals at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. West Indies, who had not beaten England since 2018, ended a 13-match losing streak and won Group B to reach the Sharjah semi-finals, where they will face New Zealand. West Indies last played in the T20 World Cup semi-finals the same year. This is only the second time that England have failed to progress beyond the knockout stage, after being eliminated in the group stage of the 2010 T20 World Cup. They were optimistic of reaching the last four this time after winning their first three games. South Africa will replace England in the West Indies, after England finished third in the group due to their net run-rate. Chasing a target of 142, West Indies captain Hayley Matthews and opener Kianna Joseph set the stage with explosive half-centuries as their team registered a memorable win over the world No. 2 team.

Thanks to Mathews (50 runs on 38 balls) and Joseph (52 runs on 38 balls), West Indies scored 89-0 in 10 overs. Their partnership of 12 fours and three sixes stunned England. Despite losing both openers in quick succession, West Indies maintained their composure.

Deandra Dottin scored 27 runs off 19 balls and some important contributions from Shamen Campbell and Aaliyah Alleyne led West Indies to a comfortable win, as Alleyne scored the winning run in the 18th over.

The defeat was a major blow to England, who struggled both with the bat and in the field throughout the match. England, who came to bat first, could only score 141-7 runs, in which Nat Sciver-Brunt's innings of 57 runs in 50 balls was the only positive aspect. After the fall of early wickets, England's score was 34-3 in seven overs and captain Heather Knight had to leave the field with a calf injury, further reducing their form.
