Amazon Prime Video will show ads to customers in India

Delhi Delhi. Amazon Prime Video subscribers in India will start seeing ads during shows and movies from next year – a move the company says is necessary for future investment in content. This change comes just months after Amazon changed its subscription model for Prime Video in the US. Also, Amazon is considering charging users more for an ad-free streaming experience on Prime Video.

“To continue investing in engaging content and growing that investment over the long term, starting in 2025, Prime Video shows and movies will include limited advertising in India,” Amazon said in a statement. However, it did not clarify what kind of advertisements these would be. The company said it aims to serve “significantly fewer” ads than its competitors. Currently, no streaming service serves advertisements to paid subscribers. Platforms like ZEE5 and Disney+ Hotstar operate through a 'freemium' model, where subscribers can watch selected content for free with ads, but have to purchase a subscription for uninterrupted streaming in high video quality.

Amazon also offers free streaming through its MiniTV OTT platform, which was recently rebranded as Amazon MX Player following the acquisition of some of MX Player's assets. However, Prime subscribers have access to the company's most extensive catalog of movies and shows, including original shows like the award-winning show Panchayat. Amazon also offers a Prime Lite subscription that costs less than a regular Prime subscription. However, Prime Lite subscribers watch commercials during shows and movies, which can be streamed at 720p video quality.
