The festival of Bhaiya Dooj is celebrated with great enthusiasm all over India on Kartik Shukla II. Since the ancient Vedic period, this sacred festival is celebrated as a symbol of brother-sister love.
Not only lamp garlands, but garlands of many festivals and celebrations are also associated with Diwali. The five days from Trayodashi to Kartik Dwitiya are present every year with many sacred memories and traditions. One of these festivals is – Bhratri Dwitiya or Bhaidooj, which is celebrated on the third day of Diwali. This festival, celebrated all over India, is called by different names, like Bhaifota in Bengal, Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Beej in Gujarat, Tika in Punjab etc.

Over time, many mythological stories were created to nurture the loyal, selfless and devoted love between brothers and sisters.
According to the mythological story of Bhaidooj, there was a deep love between Surya's son Yama and his daughter Yami, but due to Yama's preoccupation with the kingdom, Yami could not meet her brother Yama for a long time. When the mind became very distraught, Yami sent an urgent message requesting him to meet Yama immediately. After receiving information from his sister, Yama quickly reached her. That day was Bhaiya Dooj day. Yami gave unprecedented welcome to Yama. Pleased, Yama asked Yami to ask for anything. Then Yami asked for this boon that you should come to meet me at least once in a year on this day. Yama happily accepted and said that people hesitate and fear even remembering my name, while you are inviting with reverence, then why will I not come. On this day, any sister who calls even the worst of her brothers and offers tilak, his sins will be washed away.
Since Yamraj had dinner at his sister Yamuna's house on this day, brothers continue this tradition for ages even today.
According to another interesting story of Bhaiya Dooj, a girl had many brothers. But everyone left this world one by one. Only one was left. On the day of Bhaiya Dooj, when he was going to his sister's house to get vaccinated, he met a lion on the way, who proceeded to kill and eat him. The boy requested that he eat it when he returns from his sister's house after getting vaccinated, the lion agreed.
Later on we found a snake. The boy made the same promise to him also. Similarly, after overcoming many obstacles, he reached his sister's place and after getting vaccinated, the brother told him everything on the way. The sister understood that the death of this last brother was also near. Therefore, he worshiped Yamraj with full devotion and asked for a boon that his brother would not die untimely death. After that she herself took her brother with her. On the way, all those creatures moved towards him, but after seeing the mark on the brother's forehead, they turned back. In this way the brother reached home safely and then got a long life.
In fact, these strange stories throw light on the importance of Bhaidooj and inspire that the relationship between brothers and sisters can be strengthened only through selfless spirit.
On this date, there is a tradition of eating food at the sister's place and giving her some food, which is considered auspicious. On this day, brothers and sisters from far and wide reach Mathura to take bath in Yamuna and participate in the virtues. There is a belief that if a brother eats food prepared by his sister on the banks of Yamuna, it increases his life. Business people also worship pen and paper on this day.
