Wildlife Institute of India is going to do research on the activities of wolves which have become synonymous with terror…

)Dehradun: Wolves, which have become synonymous with terror in many areas of Uttar Pradesh, have now become a part of the study of scientists. After incidents of attacks on humans in many states of the country, the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is going to do research on the number of wolves and their activities. The special thing is that till now there has never been an official national level census regarding wolves. In such a situation, this study of WII is being considered very important. ETV special report on the study on wolves of India.

Wolves are friends of humans: Recently, there was a lot of news about wolf terror across the country. There were reports of wolf attacks in some other states of the country including Uttar Pradesh. These sudden events cast the wolves in the role of villains. But the reality is that wolves are not enemies of humans but friends and they have an important contribution in the cycle of biodiversity. Especially in farming, these wolves prove to be indirectly helpful to the farmers. WII scientists will study on the wolf which has become synonymous with terror.

Research papers came but no official census was done: Till now no official record has been prepared regarding the number of wolves in the country. However, some research papers have been published at the level of scientists, in which the number of wolves has been estimated. Apart from this, IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) has prepared a record on Himalayan wolves for the first time, the report of which is yet to be made public. The number of wolves in the country is estimated to be decreasing: Dr. Bilal Habib, senior scientist of Wildlife Institute of India. It is said that according to the assessment of the research paper, at present the number of wolves left in the country is only 2,500 to 3,000. Whereas about 100 years ago their number is said to have been up to 2 lakhs.

There will be a study on wolves. Efforts are being made to get closer to the number of wolves through studies by the Wildlife Institute of India. Although this study is also not in the form of official calculations of the Government of India, but WII is going to do research on wolves very intensively, which is likely to be completed in the next 6 months. Experts will study wolves from breeding to hunting: Wolves Scientists are assessing the reason for the sudden attack in Uttar Pradesh and other states of the country. The special thing is that wolf is not a wild animal living in forests, rather 80% of wolves live in grass lands outside the forests. During this time, due to their habitat being affected, wolves are coming closer to human settlements. The matter of concern is that not only the hunting areas of wolves but also their breeding areas are being affected.

Wolves hit by natural disasters: Scientists believe that an area of one to one and a half kilometers from the wolf breeding site should be completely suitable for wolves. Similarly, an area of about 200 square kilometers should be available for a wolf pack, but continuous human influence is affecting these areas as well. Apart from this, due to natural disasters, wolves sometimes have to change their habitat.

Some important information about wolves. WII is working on the existing method of counting wolves: Wildlife Institute of India is working on the existing method to know the number of wolves. Under this, the scientists of the institute first identify the habitats of wolves in the entire country. That is, a place is searched where wolves reside. Wolves live in an area of about 200 square kilometers. That is why so many areas at the habitat are identified for their study. During this, it is also seen which habitat is better. This can be assessed considering the number of wolves in that area, the food situation there and the possibility of disturbance. After this, their study is completed by taking an average group size.

Wolves are helpful to farmers: After the recent incidents, wolves have started being seen as enemies, but the reality is that wolves are not enemies of humans but friends. Wolves play a very important role in agriculture and are helpful in maintaining the grassland system. They play a very important role in the farming of farmers. This is because the wolf controls the population of grassland wildlife like nilgai, black buck, wild boar and chinkara. In this way, wolves are a boon for farmers to control the population of these wild animals that cause harm to agriculture.

Wolves had created terror in Bahraich: Let us tell you that the series of wolf terror started from Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh and after this, wolf attacks started being heard in Pratapgarh, Sitapur, Kaushambi, Sambhal and Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh itself. During this period, a total of 10 deaths were recorded from March to September. The matter did not stop here, similar cases of wolves were also reported in Sehore and Khandwa of Madhya Pradesh. Not only this, some such incidents were also heard from Maharashtra. However, if we talk about the presence of wolves, they are found in many states in the country from South India to North India. This includes the states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Karnataka.
