How did the bandit Ratnakar become Maharishi Valmiki? (Valmiki Jayanti 2024)

According to religious texts, the former name of Maharishi Valmiki was Ratnakar, who earlier lived as a dacoit. One day Ratnakar, who was hiding in the forest with the intention of plundering, met Narada Muni. During this, Narad Muni asked him whether his family was ready to suffer the bad consequences of the sinful deeds he was committing for his family? When Ratnakar, i.e. not Maharishi, asked this question to his family, everyone refused.

This incident created renunciation in Ratnakar's mind and he decided to adopt the path of penance. For many years, he remained absorbed in complete meditation while chanting the name of Ram, due to which ants made termites on his body. The house of the day is called Valmiki, and for this reason he was named Valmiki. This is why his penance and transformation earned him the title of Maharishi.

On whose advice was the great saga of Ramayana written?

Maharishi Valmiki composed Ramayana based on the life and ideals of Lord Rama on the orders of Brahmadev. Brahma Dev gave darshan and inspired Maharishi Valmiki to write an epic on the character of Shri Ram, and thus Valmiki Ramayana was composed.
