No physical license or RC needed for Delhi vehicles soon? Here’s why

The Delhi government is considering a shift to digital versions of driving licenses (DL) and registration certificates (RC), offering a more convenient, electronic alternative to the current system, according to officials, PTI reported. The new plan would allow citizens to download and print their e-DL and e-RC in a format similar to an Aadhaar card, complete with a unique ID and QR code for verification by traffic authorities.
A senior Delhi Transport department official stated that the digital documents could be accessed through apps like DigiLocker or mParivahanor printed for physical use when needed. This move is aimed at simplifying the process for residents, making it easier to present valid documents during checks.

Between 2023 and 2024, the department has already issued 1.6 lakh licenses and 6.69 lakh registration certificates as of May. Although the system has existed for a while now, under the new initiative, future licenses and RCs would be exclusively issued in digital form.
The downloadable PDF files, accessible via the Delivery Service portal, will feature a QR code to confirm their authenticity, with links sent to applicants’ registered mobile numbers for easy access.
This development follows concerns raised by Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot regarding delays in vehicle registrations. The minister has directed the department to explore the feasibility of digital RCs to streamline the registration process and enhance efficiency for Delhi’s residents.
