Karwa Chauth is a significant festival celebrated predominantly in North India, where married women observe a day-long fast for the well-being and longevity of their husbands. This long Nirjala fast is done during the KRishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik. Karwa or Karak refers to the earthen pot through which water offering, known as Argha, is made to the moon. On this auspicious festival, married women deck up in the evening waiting for the moon to rise and to open their fast.

Karwa Chauth story

The origins of Karwa Chauth can be traced back to ancient times, with various legends and tales associated with it. One popular story recounts the tale of a devoted queen who fasted for her husband’s life. Deeply adored and loved by her seven brothers, her siblings manually tricked her into seeing the moon and breaking her fast which led to the demise of her husband. Upon knowing the truth, she fasted for another full day.  Impressed by her dedication, the gods granted her husband a long life. This narrative has become a symbol of love and commitment, inspiring women to observe the fast each year.

According to Drik Panchang, the puja muhurat commences at 6:12 PM and will culminate by 7:26 PM. The panchang reported moonrise time for Karwa Chauth to be at 8:37 PM. The time may slightly vary for different cities.

Karwa Chauth rituals

Karwa Chauth is steeped in rituals that begin early in the morning.  The day starts with a pre-dawn meal called sargi, prepared by the mother-in-law. Women eat this meal before sunrise to sustain themselves throughout the fast.

Karwa Chauth is not just a day of fasting; it fosters a strong sense of community and bonding among women. Friends and family often come together to share the experience, exchanging stories, songs, and laughter. The festival also highlights the importance of marital unity and mutual respect.

In contemporary times, Karwa Chauth has evolved, with many couples celebrating together, regardless of whether they are married. Some men also participate in the fast to show solidarity and love. Additionally, the festival is accompanied by vibrant decorations, festive clothing, and elaborate jewelry, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.
