‘Indian version of 36 all out’ – India trolled after top-order crumbles against New Zealand in Chinnaswamy Test

The Indian team got off to a dismal start in the ongoing first IND vs NZ Test, with the hosts getting reduced to an embarassing 34 for 6 before lunch on Day 2.

With rain wiping out Day 1, India opted to bat first on the second day before Rohit Sharma’s side suffered a top-order collapse and lost more than half the side in only 23.5 overs against the Kiwi pacers.

Star batsmen Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan and Ravindra Jadeja all departed for a duck.

Following the lunch break, Ashwin departed on the very first ball, reducing the score further to 34 for 7.

Notably, India endured the humiliation of registering their lowest Test total during the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in their previous tour of Australia.

In Adelaide, they were dismissed for a meager 36, marking only their second sub-50 score in Test cricket (the other one being 42 all out vs England in 1974). However, the team staged a remarkable recovery, ultimately winning the series 2-1 in Brisbane.

India at risk of scoring lowest ever total in Tests at home

Now, With another Border-Gavaskar Trophy series approaching, India’s preparations have hit an early stumbling block. Soon enough, fans took to social media to compare the horror show in Australia with the ongoing nightmare at home.

India’s lowest-ever Test total on home soil occurred in 1987 when they were bowled out for just 75 by the West Indies in Delhi, with seamer Patrick Patterson taking five wickets. A similar collapse happened 19 years later in 2008, when Dale Steyn’s impressive 5/23 in Ahmedabad saw India dismissed for 76.

Currently, India faces the possibility of matching this dismal record in the ongoing IND vs NZ Test and producing one of their poorest batting displays in Test history.
