New Delhi. Justice Sanjiv Khanna Chief Justice of India: Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has written a letter to the government requesting to appoint Sanjiv Khanna as Chief Justice after him. Supreme Court Chief Justice DY Chandrachud is retiring from his post on November 10, 2024. Therefore, he has sent the name of Justice Sanjiv Khanna to the Central Government for the next Chief Justice of the country. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is generally appointed on the principle of seniority. Accordingly, Chief Justice Chandrachud has recommended Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

Chief Justice of India Dhananjay Chandrachud has formally declared Justice Sanjiv Khanna as his successor. In a letter sent to the Law Ministry of the Central Government, Chief Justice Chandrachud has said that since he is retiring on November 11, Justice Khanna will be his successor. If approved by the government, Justice Khanna will become the 51st Chief Justice of India. His tenure will be for six months, which will end on May 13, 2025. After this he will retire.

The Chief Justice is the head of the Supreme Court Collegium, which recommends the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court and various high courts of the country. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will retire after holding the post for two years. He has recommended the name of his successor before the end of his tenure.

Who is Justice Sanjeev Khanna?

As far as Justice Sanjeev Khanna is concerned, he has been the judge of Delhi High Court for 14 years. He was born on 14 May 1960. He studied law from the Campus Law Center of Delhi University. After graduation, he enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi Bar Council in 1983. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019.

Elevated from Delhi High Court to Supreme Court

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take over as the Chief Justice on November 11, 2024, for a tenure of six months. Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hold office till May 13, 2025. After this he will retire. He was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court in January 2019. Presently he is handling cases related to Company Law, Arbitration, Service Law, Maritime Law, Civil Law and Commercial Law. Sanjeev Khanna also worked as a senior lawyer in the Income Tax Department. He has also appeared as government lawyer in several criminal cases in Delhi.

Hearing on reservation issue

During his tenure of four and a half years, Justice Sanjiv Khanna has served as a member of 358 benches and delivered judgments in more than 90 cases. In 2023, he delivered the Constitution Bench verdict in the Shilpa Shailesh case. He was also part of the bench that decided the petition seeking additional compensation for the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy. Last year, he was also part of the bench that heard the issue of reservation in promotion for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
