Dale Steyn parted ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad

Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn, who worked as the fast bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024, shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday (October 17) that he is leaving his coaching role. Steyn, who played for teams like RCB, Gujarat Titans, and SRH before becoming the coach, said he won’t be coming back to India for the IPL next year. However, he will keep working with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league in South Africa and help them try to win their third title in a row.

“Cricket announcement. Thanks a lot to Sunrisers Hyderabad for having me as their bowling coach in the IPL. Sadly, I won’t be back for IPL 2025. But, I’ll keep working with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. We’ve won twice in the SA20, let’s aim for a third straight win,” Steyn tweeted.

Steyn became SRH’s fast bowling coach in December 2021 and held the position for three years. During his time, players like Umran Malik gained significant recognition in IPL 2022 by taking 22 wickets in 14 games, which led to him being selected to play for India.

In the 2024 season of the IPL, Steyn coached Pat Cummins, who was both Australia’s ODI and Test captain. Cummins was also named captain of SRH after being bought for Rs 20.50 crore in the 2024 IPL auction.

The 2016 IPL winner, Sunrisers, plans to keep South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen, along with Cummins and Abhishek Sharma, before the IPL 2025 big auction. According to ESPNCricinfo, Klaasen will be Sunrisers’ top choice for Rs 23 crore, and Cummins will stay with the team owned by Kavya Maran for Rs 18 crore. Meanwhile, India’s top-order batter Abhishek is expected to be kept for Rs 14 crore.

Additionally, Sunrisers might also keep Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
