Meta lays off employees in WhatsApp, Instagram and other teams”

Social media giant Meta has laid off staff across multiple teams, including WhatsApp and Instagram, apparently as part of a restructuring exercise, reports said on Thursday.

Meta did not immediately comment on how many employees were affected by the latest round of job cuts.

In a statement to TechCrunch, the company confirmed that layoffs have been made across multiple teams.

“Some of Meta's teams are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and location strategy,” a Meta spokesperson was quoted as saying.

“This includes moving some teams to different locations and moving some employees into different roles,” the spokesperson said. In situations when a role becomes vacant, we work hard to find other opportunities for affected employees.”

According to the report, employees working at Instagram, Reality Labs, and WhatsApp have been affected by the layoffs.

Several Metra workers announced on social media platforms that they had been fired.

Jane Manchun Wong, who was part of the Threads team, posted: “I'm still considering this, but I've been told that my role in Meta has been affected. “Thank you to everyone, especially my threads and Instagram teammates, for my wonderful journey in Meta”.

“If anyone is interested in working together, especially on software/security engineering, please get in touch via my LinkedIn, email, etc. given on my personal website,” he wrote on the threads.

Earlier this year, Meta laid off workers in its Reality Labs division.

The social media company run by Mark Zuckerberg is the first to fire 11,000 employees in 2022. In 2023, Meta will lay off 10,000 more employees as part of CEO Zuckerberg's “Year of Efficiency” and retire 5,000 vacant positions that have yet to be filled.
