His father was an employee in the Indian Railways. His childhood was not easy at all. Om Puri was the youngest among his 8 siblings. His brothers and sisters had died due to lack of medical facilities. Only one of his brothers survived. Om Puri's father also went to jail, he was accused of theft. After this Om Puri's family became homeless.

At that time his brother worked as a porter. Om Puri used to work at a tea shop to feed his family. Apart from this, during difficult days, he has also done the work of lifting coal from the railway track. When he was 7 years old, instead of studying, he used to clean utensils at a food shop, because the condition of his family was very poor.

Later he also worked as a clerk in a government office in Punjab, from where he got Rs 600 every month. After this he decided to leave his job and take up acting.
