Deco Comments on Yamal and Messi Comparison: Barcelona sporting director Deco commented on their young sensation Lamine Yamal being compared to club legends like Lionel Messi.

Deco, who was a Barca icon as a player, is now busy in his new role at Barcelona. He lauded Yamal in an interview with the SPORT

Lamine Yamal had his breakthrough in Barcelona when he was just 15 years old. Now that the youngster turned 17, he has already completed 60 senior caps with the club and 17 times for the country. He was Spain’s premier attacking option at 2024 Euros. Spain later went on to win the competition.

After the Euros, the youngster further increased his popularity, and many compared him with former and current football legends. The main comparison that Yamal gets subjected to has been Argentine superstar Lionel Messi. Just like Messi, Yamal is also a product of Barcelona’s football academy, La Masia. He also gets compared to former Barca legends Johan Cryuff, Ronaldinho, and Andres Iniesta.

According to Deco, these comparisons are normal because of the passion and idolatry that football has. Deco also said that ‘Lamine is writing his own story’ and the other legends had their own at their time.

“There will always be comparisons because football is passion and idolatry, and we cannot ask the opposite of people, but everything in its time. Lamine is writing his own story. Leo, Johan, (Andres) Iniesta or Ronaldinho had their moment.”

The key difference between Messi and Yamal’s Barcelona debut is that the former had been introduced to a club that was already winning trophies with the likes of Ronaldinho, Xavi, and Iniesta ruling Barca’s attack. Lamine on the other hand is a part of Barcelona that is rebuilding after the club’s recent hard times. Deco sees Yamal as one of the keystones in Barca’s rebuild.

“He has everything to be a benchmark for this club and it is wonderful to have him at home, to be able to take care of him and appreciate him. He has not been lucky enough to grow up in a team that was winning like Messi, but he is being part of a renewal process.”
