The credit for the construction of this temple goes to Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, who was the Maratha queen who ruled in 1780. The original Kashi Vishwanath temple was destroyed by Qutb-ud-din Aibak during his Kannauj rule. This temple was rebuilt by a Gujarati businessman during the reign of Sultan Iltutmish of Delhi.
