Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant teamed up on Saturday morning to lead India’s fightback after being bowled out for 46 in the first innings against New Zealand in Bengaluru. The hosts made a staggering return in their second innings with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan scoring valiant fifties. As the fourth day progressed, Pant and Sarfaraz took charge and brought up a fifty partnership in no time.

The runs were flowing for India while the Kiwis were toiling hard to get a breakthrough. The visitors almost had a chance to dismiss the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman but Sarfaraz’s animated intervention did not let that happen.

After playing a late cut off Matt Henry’s bowling, Sarfaraz picked up a single but Pant probably wanted a second. The latter took off late for the second run with his eyes on the ball but Sarfaraz jumped across the pitch to stop his partner. Pant was lucky that Daryl Mitchell was well ahead of the stumps while the throw did not hit the stumps.

India had a close shave but Sarfaraz’s animated SOS call caught everyone’s attention. Commentator Ravi Shastri took a note and said, “Sarfaraz Khan is doing a Rain Dance here.”

Sarfaraz notched up his maiden Test century on the fourth morning of the first Test against New Zealand. He got to the milestone with a beautiful punch through the covers for four, taking just 110 deliveries. Soon after reaching three figures, Sarfaraz soaked in the moment while holding his arms aloft and pointed his bat towards the Indian dressing room while roaring in delight.

He thus became the 22nd Indian batsman in Test history to score a duck and a century in the same Test. Shubman Gill, who missed this contest due to a fitness issue, recently registered a duck and a century in the Chennai Test against Bangladesh.

New Zealand took a big 356-run lead in the first innings thanks to a superb century from Rachin Ravindra. However, India responded in kind with Sarfaraz hitting a century while Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma scored half-centuries.
