BRICS Summit 2024: Putin praises PM Modi; Appreciated India's balanced stance on Ukraine issue

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently praised India and its Prime Minister Narendra Modi while discussing the BRICS alliance. In conversation with foreign journalists he touched upon various geopolitical issues including the role of BRICS and the Ukraine war.

During the conversation, Putin emphasized that BRICS is not an anti-Western organization but a non-Western organization, reiterating Prime Minister Modi's previous statement. He said that the doors of BRICS are open for new members. As the organization grows, non-member countries will also benefit economically.

Putin on Ukraine war and NATO

Responding to questions about the Russia–Ukraine conflict, Putin strongly criticized the United States and Western countries for their involvement. He accused NATO of fighting the war on Ukraine's behalf and said it was difficult to predict or determine the timeline of the war. He noted that attempting to set a deadline would be counterproductive.

Asked about India's possible role in peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, Putin referred to Prime Minister Modi's expressed concerns. He called Modi a “friend” and expressed gratitude for India's balanced stance on the issue.

Economic and geopolitical challenges

Putin also accused the US of trying to hinder China's development, comparing the effort to “telling the sun to stop rising.” He highlighted that the BRICS nations, including Russia, India, Brazil, China and South Africa, are working towards creating an inclusive and mutually beneficial economic framework that is not hostile towards any country.

India's role in BRICS and Putin's upcoming visit

Putin's praise for India's leadership within BRICS was clear. He emphasized how Prime Minister Modi's non-hostile approach towards the organization matches Russia's approach. Putin will soon visit Kazan, Russia, where the 16th BRICS summit is scheduled to be held on October 22-23, 2024. Founding members Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will participate in the summit.

BRICS and global influence

In his concluding speech, Putin reiterated that the BRICS organization is unique because its foundation was never laid against any country or alliance. The future expansion of BRICS is also expected to provide economic benefits to countries outside the alliance. With India's active participation, the organization is set to continue its growth on the global stage.

Putin's comments not only reflect his high regard for India's role but also his confidence in BRICS as an important player in shaping a balanced global order.
