According to reports, he met China's Vice Premier Ding Xiuxiang on Friday and also spoke to Foreign Minister Wang Yi later the same day. Britain's Foreign Minister is on a two-day visit to China as part of efforts to improve relations with Beijing. In fact, relations between the two countries have soured over allegations of espionage, supporting Russia in the war against Ukraine and repression of the freedom of ordinary citizens in Hong Kong. The British government stressed that ties with China are “pragmatic and necessary,” officials said.

He said Lammy raised complex issues, including human rights concerns in Hong Kong and China's far-western Xinjiang province, and Russia. According to a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry after the meeting, “Lammy said that Britain and China have a common interest in European peace and the end of war.” He confirmed that China's supply of equipment to Russia to help in the war against Ukraine could affect China's relations with European countries.
