Birthday Special: How 'Nawab of Najafgarh' became 'Sultan of Multan', ended Saqlain Mushtaq's Test career

It can be said that he taught us to play Test cricket fearlessly. The story of how Virender Sehwag, famously known as Nawab of Najafgarh, became the Sultan of Multan is no less interesting.

Virender Sehwag has played many memorable innings in his career, but his inning of 309 runs played against Pakistan in Multan holds special significance. This triple century made Sehwag the 'Sultan of Multan'. Along with this, he introduced the whole world to his image of playing Test cricket in ODI style. Sehwag scored that triple century in the year 2004, when the Indian team went on a historic tour of Pakistan for three Tests and five ODI matches.

What is the whole story of that innings?

This tour started from Multan. Where the first match of the test series was played. In that match, in the absence of Sourav Ganguly, acting captain Rahul Dravid won the toss and decided to bat first. Scored 228 runs on the first day itself. The Indian innings had a very good start and Sehwag along with Aakash Chopra made a partnership of 160 runs in just 40 overs. However, Aakash Chopra's contribution in this partnership was only 42 runs. By the time Aakash Chopra was out, Sehwag had completed his century.

Sehwag completed his century by hitting a six off Shoaib Akhtar. After Aakash Chopra, Rahul Dravid came to the crease, but he could not do anything special and became the victim of Mohammed Shami on the score of 6 runs. After this, Sachin Tendulkar and Sehwag together started taking the innings forward. Both the players did not give any chance to Pakistan and scored a lot of runs. When the first day's play ended, India's score was 356 runs for 2 wickets. Of these, 228 runs came from Sehwag's bat.

Sehwag was expected to score a triple century on the second day of the match and he did not disappoint at all. Shortly after lunch, Sehwag completed his triple century by hitting a six off Saqlain Mushtaq. With this, Sehwag became the first Indian batsman to score a triple century in a Test match. Sehwag achieved this feat by facing just 364 balls which included 38 fours and six sixes. Sehwag left the field shortly after scoring the triple century, but by then he had created history and had become the Sultan of Multan.

Saqlain's test career is over

Virender Sehwag made Pakistani fans his fan with his explosive batting and triple century. On the other hand, that test match became a nightmare for Saqlain Mushtaq. Saqlain bowled a total of 43 overs in that match. He had spent 204 runs in these overs. Due to this match, Pakistan's legendary spinner Saqlain Mustaq could not play a Test match again.
