Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the International Telecommunication Union – World Telecommunication Standardization Council (WTSA) 2024 at India Hall in New Delhi. During the event, the Prime Minister also inaugurated the 8th edition of India Mobile Congress 2024. The event was attended by Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, heads of Indian telecom companies including Jio, Airtel, 3,000 industry leaders, policy makers and technologists from more than 190 countries.

Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India is one of the most telecommuting countries. There are 120 crore mobile phone users in India. There are 95 crore internet users. More than 40 percent of the world's real-time digital transactions happen in India. The World Telecommunications Standardization Council is about making the world better by building consensus. For thousands of years India has followed the immortal message that the world is one family (Vasudaiva Kutumbakam). When we got the opportunity to host the G20 summit, we gave the message of One Earth, One Family, One Future. India is working to unite the world through struggle.

As of 2014, there were only two mobile manufacturing units in India. Today there are more than 200. Earlier we used to import most of the phones. Today we are known as a mobile phone exporting country. India now produces 6 times more mobile phones than before. We did not stop here. Now, we are engaged in providing completely Made in India phones to the world. We are taking steps to manufacture end-to-end products from chips using indigenous technology. For this we are investing heavily in semiconductors in India.

The length of optical fiber that India has laid in just 10 years is eight times the distance between the Earth and the Moon. Two years ago, we introduced 5G at Mobile Congress. Today almost all the districts of the country have been connected to 5G service. We are also working rapidly to bring 6G technology. The time has come for global organizations to embrace the importance of global governance. All digital tools and applications available today transcend national boundaries. Therefore, no country alone can protect its citizens from cyber threats. Global organizations need to work together. Just as global rules and regulatory frameworks have been developed for the aviation industry, international rules and regulation should also be developed for the digital world. India’s Data Protection Act and National Cyber ​​Security Strategy demonstrate India’s commitment to creating a secure digital environment,” he said.

The Union Communications Ministry issued a statement on the importance of this conference saying, 'WTSA is a conference organized every four years for the standardization work of the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations agency for digital technologies. This is the first time that the ITU-WTSA conference will be held in India and the Asia-Pacific region. It is a premier global event that brings together over 3,000 industry leaders, policy makers and technologists from over 190 countries representing the telecommunications, digital and information technology sectors.

WTSA 2024 will provide a platform for countries to discuss and decide on standards for next generation key technologies such as 6G, AI, IoT, Big Data, Cyber ​​Security etc. Hosting the event in India will give the country an opportunity to play a key role in shaping the global telecom agenda and paving the way for future technologies.
