Sapelo Island Georgia: At least 7 people died after the gangway of the ferry pier on Sapelo Island collapsed

Sapelo Island Georgia : A major disaster occurred on Georgia's Sapelo Island on Saturday when a portion of a ferry pier collapsed, killing at least seven people. According to reports, Georgia Department of Natural Resources spokesman Tyler Jones said several people were taken to hospitals, and the U.S. The Coast Guard, McIntosh County Fire Department, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and other crews are searching the waters for any other survivors. Jones said a gangway on the pier collapsed and people fell into the water.

The incident occurred as a crowd gathered for a celebration of the small Gullah-Geechee community of black slave descendants on the island. Sapeleo Island is about 100 kilometers south of Savannah and is accessible by boat from the mainland.
