Vietnam has deemed the extradition of a terrorist from Thailand who was behind deadly attacks in Vietnam “appropriate” to ensure that all criminals are held accountable under the law.

“Y Quynh Bdap was behind the recruitment, incitement, and instruction of the terrorist attack on June 11, 2023 in Dak Lak Province which caused grievous consequences,” Pham Thu Hang, spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said during a press briefing on Thursday.

“This individual was tried in court and sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Dak Lak People’s Court for terrorism.”

Hang emphasized that the extradition of Y Quynh Bdap to Vietnam aligns with legal procedures and ensures that every criminal is subject to justice. Vietnamese authorities will continue collaborating with their Thai counterparts to address the issue in accordance with the laws of both countries, she added.

On Jan. 20, the Dak Lak People’s Court sentenced several individuals involved in the 2023 terrorist attacks on the Ea Ktur and Ea Tieu commune headquarters, which resulted in the deaths of nine officials and civilians. Y Quynh Bdap was one of the six convicted who had fled abroad and has been residing in Thailand since 2018. He was arrested by Thai authorities on June 11 for allegedly overstaying his visa.

The Bangkok Criminal Court on Sept. 30 approved Vietnam’s request for Y Quynh Bdap’s extradition, Thai media reported. He remains in custody in Bangkok, and the Thai government has 90 days to carry out the extradition.
