Rachin Ravindra batted brilliantly in difficult conditions: Tom Latham

New Zealand were challenged to chase the target of 107 runs on the fifth day against India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. New Zealand achieved this target at the loss of two wickets, but Jasprit Bumrah did not allow them to achieve this target very easily.

Amidst the brilliant bowling of Bumrah, apart from Will Young's unbeaten 48 runs, Rachin Ravindra also reduced the tension in the New Zealand dressing room by playing an unbeaten 39 runs in the second innings and led the team to a memorable victory. Earlier, Rachin had played a brilliant inning of 134 runs in the first innings.

In this way, New Zealand achieved the target of 107 runs with 8 wickets remaining and registered its first Test win in India since 1988.

Kiwi captain Tom Latham praised the brilliant innings of Rachin Ravindra, who played a key role in giving New Zealand a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

He said, “The partnership between Rachin and Tim gave the lead at a time when no one had the upper hand in the match. We know how much ability Tim has in batting. It was good to chase only around 100 later on.”

After the match, Tom Latham said, “Rachin is a young player who has played Test cricket a few years ago. The way he has played over the last 12 months and the way he has stepped into his new role has given him a new identity. He has shown his class in the first innings itself. After that, the way he batted today (Sunday), the people sitting in our dressing room became calm and tension free.”

Tom Latham further said, “Losing the toss in Bengaluru proved to be good for them. I think we were actually going to bat first. It was good to lose the toss in the end. We bowled well and got results. We knew that India would make a comeback against us in the third innings, but the bowlers once again made us make a comeback in the match.”
