Prathamesh loses in semis, misses maiden medal at Archery World Cup Final

Compound archer Prathamesh Fuge missed out on a medal at the Archery World Cup Final in Mexico on Sunday.

Prathamesh lost to defending champion Mathias Fullerton in the men’s compound semifinal.

In an exciting contest, Prathamesh and Mathias shot perfect 10s throughout all five regulation ends, assembling 15 arrows each, without dropping a single point.

As the match reached deadlock at 150-all, a shoot-off was required to decide the winner.

The shoot-off resulted in another 10-all tie, but Mathias, who hails from Denmark, defeated Prathmesh by mere millimetres, with his arrow landing closer to the centre.

By losing the match, the Indian archer missed out on a chance to win his maiden medal.

Prathmesh later fought for the bronze medal but lost to world champion Mike Schloesser 146-150 in the playoff.

Mathias, meanwhile, settled for the silver medal after losing to American James ‘Jimmy’ Lutz 149-150 in the final.

Earlier, Prathmesh defeated fellow Indian archer Priyansh 147-146 in the quarterfinal. They were the two Indians made the cut to the eight-member draw in the World Cup Final.

Meanwhile, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the Asian Games gold medallist, was the lone Indian qualifier in the women’s compound section. But she returned empty-handed from her second successive appearance.

This was Jyothi’s second straight quarterfinal exit. Last year, she lost to Meeri-Marita Paas of Estonia 145-147.

On Sunday, Deepika Kumari and Dhiraj Bommadevara will lead India’s campaign in the recurve categories.
