Joshua and Alemadis won Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon title

Runners Joshua Cheptegei of Uganda and Elemadis Iyayu of Ethiopia won the men's and women's titles in the 19th edition of Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon on Sunday.

Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon organized here today was flagged off from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. In the men's 10,000 meters race, current world champion Joshua Cheptegei won with a timing of 59.46 seconds. Elemadisa Iyayu won the women's title with a timing of one hour, eight minutes and 17 seconds. In the men's category, Kenya's Alex Matata stood second with a timing of 59 minutes 53 seconds and his compatriot Nicholas Kipkorir stood third with a timing of 59 minutes 59 seconds. In the women's category, Cynthia Limo of Kenya finished second with a timing of one hour, eight minutes and 27 seconds. Ethiopia's Tiruye Mesfin finished third with a timing of 1:9:42.

India's Sawan Barwal won the men's title with a timing of 1 hour 2 minutes and 46 seconds and Lily Das won the women's title with a timing of 1 hour 18 minutes and 12 seconds.

In the Indian men's category, Puneet Yadav stood second with a timing of one hour three minutes 55 seconds and Kiran Matre achieved the second position with a timing of one hour four minutes 58 seconds.
In the Indian elite women's category, Lily Das was miles ahead of her rivals, winning the gold medal with a timing of 1 hour 18 minutes 12 seconds. Last year's winner Kavita Yadav finished second with a timing of 1 hour 19 minutes 44 seconds. Asian Games bronze medalist Preeti Lamba finished third with a timing of 1 hour 20 minutes 21 seconds.

During this, Alex Matata (27) of Kenya ran his first half marathon at the international level with his partner Nicholas Kipkorir.

After the race, Joshua Cheptegei said, “This win in Delhi was special for me because it is my first win in a half marathon. India has been important to my career and this country means a lot to me now. Despite the slow start I felt good throughout the race. My first goal was to overtake Nicholas (Kipkorir) and then Alex (Matata) in the last few kilometers of the race. I am happy with my performance and hope to continue like this in future races as well.”

Alemadis Iyayu, “I raced well, tried to maintain my pace and aimed to do well. I am happy to achieve this.”
