Chandni Chowk has historical importance. This place was once known as Shahjahanabad. It is said that the daughter of Mughal emperor Shahjahan was very fond of shopping. To fulfill this hobby of his daughter, Shahjahan had set up a whole market in front of the Red Fort. His daughter used to shop at this place and Shahjahan was very happy with this hobby of his daughter. In 1650, Shahjahan had built this market in such a way that its beauty remains intact. At one time, water from Yamuna river also used to come here. Gradually this market became very famous among the people and started being counted among the special markets of Delhi.

Even though Chandni Chowk was settled by the Mughal ruler Shahjahan. But there is something special here for every religion and class. People of all religions and communities come and shop at this place. There is also the famous Gauri Shankar Temple and Fatehpuri Mosque in this area. Not only this, the famous Gurudwara Shishganj of Sikhs is also situated in Chandni Chowk where langar continues throughout the day. The presence of Central Baptist Church at this place makes it even more diverse. This entire market is famous for silver and gold items and jewellery. Wedding shopping is very cheap at this place.
