Ratan Tata, who passed away on October 9, nominated lawyer Darius Khambata and close friend and associate Mehli Mistry as executors of his will. His half-sisters, Shireen and Deanna Jejeebhoy, are also among the executors, Economic Times reported, citing unnamed executives aware of the matter.

Notably, Noel cannot be part of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts’ boards together because of Ratan Tata’s created structure where both the entities should have a different board for governance.

Who is Mehli Mistry?

Mehli Mistry is a businessman who was a confidante of Ratan Tata. He is the first cousin of late Cyrus Mistry, but has been a supporter of Tata, specially during the removal of Mistry as Tata Sons’ chairman in 2016. He also took care of Tata in his last years.

In 2022, Mehli earned a position as a board member for Tata’s two major philanthropic organisations – the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Together, these trusts have about 52 percent shares in Tata Sons, the private entity that holds all key Tata businesses.

Additionally, Mehli Mistry is also parts boards of over a dozen companies including M Pallonji Group, dredging operations¸ Breach Candy Hospital, Advanced Veterinary Care Foundation and the Tata Indian Institute of Social Skills, as per several reports.

Who is Darius Khambata?

Based on the report, Darius Khambata, a famous lawyer took on the responsibility of helping Ratan Tata draft his will. After a hiatus of almost seven years due to professional commitments, Khambata once again assumed his previous position as trustee for the two principal trusts last year.

Ratan Tata’s Important Assets

Ratan Tata, with a humble ownership of 0.83% of Tata Sons, is reported to have amassed a staggering Rs 7,900 crore net worth, according to the Hurun India Rich List of 2024.

Demonstrating his philanthropic side, a significant chunk of his wealth has been generously donated to charity. Furthermore, his sharp business acumen can be seen in his strategic investments in nearly twenty enterprises such as Ola, Paytm, Tracxn, FirstCry, BlueStone, CarDekho, CashKaro, Urban Company, and Upstox.

Tata also owned a holiday home in Alibaug, along with his residence in Mumbai’s Colaba.

Ratan Tata’s personal investment vehicle RNT Associates Pvt Ltd also held around ₹186 crore of investments until the financial year 2022-23. Ratan Tata and Mehli Mistry were the only two members on its board.
