Jammu Kashmir Assembly : Newly elected members of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly took oath on Monday. Pro Tem Assembly Speaker Mubarak Gul administered the oath to the newly elected members. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah took oath in Kashmiri language. 54-year-old Omar was the first MLA to take oath. However, when BJP MLA from Kishtwar Shagun Parihar stood up to take oath, all eyes were on her. Parihar, wearing a saffron turban, chanted 'Jai Shri Ram' inside the assembly and then proceeded to take the oath. He took oath as assembly member in Sanskrit.

51 people including Shagun Parihar have become MLAs for the first time. Shagun Parihar, 29, is the youngest member of the assembly. Charar-e-Sharif MLA Abdul Rahim Rather (80 years) is the oldest member.

Know who is Shagun Parihar?

Shagun Parihar has emerged as the only woman MLA of BJP in the assembly elections held in Jammu and Kashmir after 10 years. She won the election from Kishtwar seat of Jammu region. In the year 2018, Shagun Parihar's father Ajit Parihar and uncle Anil Parihar were shot by terrorists near their house. Shagun's uncle was the state secretary of BJP at that time.

When Shagun Parihar, who studied engineering, was declared a candidate by BJP, she was busy doing her PhD. In his election affidavit he has declared assets worth Rs 92.40 lakh. PM Narendra Modi had addressed Shagun Parihar as 'daughter' in the election rally in Doda.
