Yes, today i.e. Wednesday 23rd October is the 101st birth anniversary of former Rajasthan CM Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. He had many opponents in politics, but no one was his enemy. Shekhawat himself used to say that he does not believe in making enemies but in making friends. Bhairon Singh was an expert in Indian politics as well as a traditional leader. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was born on 23 October 1923 in Khachariyawas village of Sikar district of Rajasthan. His father's name was Devi Singh Shekhawat and mother's name was Banne Kanwar. He had just completed his schooling when his father passed away. After which the responsibility of the family fell on Shekhawat's shoulders and due to this he could not pursue his studies further. Initially Bhairon Singh did farming. Later he became a sub-inspector.

Political journey of Bhairon Singh

Shekhawat entered politics in the year 1952. During this period, he was a member of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 1952-72. In the 1967 elections, Bharatiya Jana Sangh and its ally Swatantra Party came very close to majority. But his government could not be formed. After this Shekhawat worked as a Rajya Sabha member from 1974-77. After which he was a member of the Rajasthan Assembly from 1977 to 2002. In the year 1977, his party won 151 out of 200 seats. After this Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was made the Chief Minister of Rajasthan.

…when became the CM of Rajasthan

After serving till 1980, Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Swatantra Party broke up. After this Shekhawat joined BJP. Along with this, he remained in the role of leader of opposition till the year 1990. In the year 1984, BJP was defeated during the rule of former PM Indira Gandhi. Then in the 1989 elections, the alliance of BJP and Janata Dal won 25 seats in the Lok Sabha. Won 140 seats in Rajasthan Assembly elections. During this period, in the year 1990, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat became the CM of Rajasthan. He remained on the post of CM till 1992.

Government saved despite conspiracies

In the next election, BJP once again won 99 seats under the leadership of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. In this way, with the support of independent supporters, Bhairon Singh was once again successful in forming the government. Thus, in the year 1993, he became the Chief Minister of Rajasthan for the third time and despite conspiracies to topple the government, he completed his tenure of 5 years. In the year 1998, Bhairon Singh had to face defeat in the elections due to inflation issues. However, in the year 1999, BJP had won the Lok Sabha elections.

Defeated in presidential election

Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is known for his efficient administration of the police and bureaucratic system. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat is also known as the father of industrial and economic development in Rajasthan. Former Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh addressed Bhairon Singh as the supreme leader of India. In the year 2002, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was elected Vice President of the country by defeating Sushil Kumar Shinde. In 2007, Bhairon Singh contested the presidential elections as an independent with the support of the National Democratic Alliance. But during this time she had to face defeat from Pratibha Patil.

Bhairon Singh achieved many achievements in his political career. In view of his extraordinary qualities, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was awarded the degree of D.Litt by Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Andhra University, Mohanlal Sukhadia University. Apart from this he was awarded fellowship by the Asiatic Society of Mumbai. He was awarded a Gold Medal and Doctorate of Medicine degree from the Yerevan State Medical University Armenia. In his last days, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was suffering from cancer. After which he was undergoing treatment in Sawai Hospital, Jaipur. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat died during treatment on 15 May 2010.
