BAI chief condemns badminton's exclusion from 2026 Commonwealth Games

Mumbai Mumbai. The upcoming Commonwealth Games have become a major controversy even before they have started, as the 2026 edition will not include some of the traditional sports of the event. The quadrennial event will become a ten-sport event after major sports like badminton, hockey and shooting were dropped from the event in a cost-saving effort. India dominates all the sports events that have been removed. The removal of traditional sports has created a lot of unrest and dissatisfaction in the sports world.

After badminton was left out of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Badminton Association of India secretary Sanjay Mishra alleged that it was a conspiracy to sideline the country's sporting potential. “This is shocking and a major blow to Indian sports, as around 40 medals are at risk from the removed events. This is not just a loss for the game and the players; This seems like a conspiracy to sideline India's growing sporting potential in the region.

“The Badminton Association of India stands firmly in protest and will reach out to all relevant authorities in the Commonwealth and BWF, as well as the highest levels of government in the country, to advocate for the future of Indian sport,” the BAI secretary said. The 2026 Commonwealth Games have been the subject of debate since the Australian city of Victoria pulled out of the honor of hosting the event due to rising costs. While Scotland took steps to defend themselves, they decided to cut costs by removing some key games. The Commonwealth Games will take place from July 23 to August 02, 2026, and will return to Glasgow after 12 years. With the removal of some traditional sports, the following sports will now feature at the 2026 Glasgow Games.
