A world record was achieved on Wednesday (October 23) in front of a handful of players as New Zealand batter Chad Bowes smashed the fastest-ever double century in List ‘A’ one-day cricket. The Canterbury Kings opener clobbered 200 off just 103 balls against the Otago Volts in front of a sparse Hagley Oval crowd, smashing the previous record by 11 balls.

Bowes snatched away the List A record from Australian and Sunrisers Hyderabad opener Travis Head, who had previously held it with 114 balls, playing for South Australia. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Tamil Nadu opener Narayan Jagadeesan had also scored 200 off 114 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match in 2022.

Bowes, who has played six ODIs and 11 T20 matches for the Black Caps so far, also became the second player in history to score a Ford Trophy double century. Former Black Caps batter Jamie How (222 in the 2012-13 season) is the only other player to do so.

Bowes was sensational against pace, spin and all types of field sittings, cracking seven sixes and 27 fours before eventually succumbing leg-before to Matt Bacon for 205.

The 32-year-old was born in South Africa and has played for South Africa Under-19 team apart from Kwazulu Natal before moving to Canterbury. He was incidentally the captain of the South Africa U19 team in 2012 World Cup, which was won by India under the captaincy of Unmukt Chand. Travis Head the previous record holder, in fact, represented Australia in that Under-19 World Cup.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming played a big role in Bowes career, helping him join the Sydenham cricket club in Christchurch. Bowes has a best of 51 in ODI cricket against Pakistan in an attack led by Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf.

When Bowes raised his bat to celebrate his 200, Canterbury were 257 for five – meaning he’d scored 78 per cent of his team’s total. Bowes’ innings saw him face 110 balls and score 150 runs in boundaries, the knock still took its toll on him, twice treated for back issues and regularly hydrated under a blazing Canterbury sun.

Bowes’ 205 is a Canterbury record but fell just short of the New Zealand Ford Trophy record for an individual innings. That still belongs to Jamie How, who made 222 for Central Districts in 2013. Canterbury finished their innings at 343/9.
