Johannesburg, October 23 (IANS). 43 students of a primary school in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province were admitted to hospital after suffering food poisoning.
Pupils at Ngaka Primary School in Matubatuba fell ill after eating snacks bought from street vendors outside the school, the provincial education department said.
“The students were taken to a local clinic and released after medical treatment,” said Muzi Mhlambi, a spokesperson for the education department in KwaZulu-Natal province.
Mhlambi said the department was cooperating with police and the health department to investigate the cause of the case, Xinhua news agency reported.
Recently, South Africa has seen an increase in cases of food poisoning among children. Six children died of food poisoning in Johannesburg on October 6 and earlier this month more than 130 students in Gauteng, Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces were hospitalized for similar reasons.
South Africa's national health department has deployed an 80-member investigation team, including environmental and health inspectors, to investigate these cases and inspect food sold in local stores. The investigation started on Monday has not yet revealed the cause of food poisoning.
