Cricketer retires mid-innings to attend the birth of his second child, returns to win the match

West Australian all-rounder Hilton Cartwright is hogging the limelight for his decision to retire mid-innings after being informed about the birth of his second child. He was playing against Tasmania in the Sheffield Shield match and had accumulated 52 when the news was revealed to him during the tea break on the Day of the contest, prompting him to leave for the hospital to be with his wife.

Cartwright’s wife, Tameka, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was going through some complications, forcing the doctor to put her through labor in the afternoon.

” Tameka was only just 37 weeks pregnant, so there was no chance of the match getting impacted by the birth of our second child, which is why I decided to be a part of it.

“However, she was made aware of the situation. I spoke to the coaches and the captain Sam Whiteman as I had to leave the venue at the tea break with a hope of returning to the crease after some time,” Cartwright said.

After seeing that his wife and their newborn were safe and sound, he made a return to the WACA in Perth. Although there were doubts whether he would be allowed to bat again by the rival team Tasmania and the match referee, Cartwright came out to bat after the dismissal of Cooper Connolly.

However, his return to the crease didn’t last long, as Riley Meredith dismissed Cartwright for 65.

His innings took Western Australia to 332 in the first innings. The side eventually won the game by six wickets, with Cartwright scoring an unbeaten 39 in an 89-run chase in the second innings.
