Process to elect new national president of BJP begins

A new face will be found in December

National President: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started the process of electing a new national president, which is targeted to be completed by December 15. The party has asked the state organizations to complete their organization elections by the first week of December, so that the constitutional requirements for the election of the new national president can be fulfilled.

History of former presidents

In the history of BJP, there have been three national presidents from South India during the Vajpayee government:

  • Bangaru Laxman
  • Jana Krishnamurthy
  • Venkaiah Naidu

In recent years, during the two terms of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the national presidents have been from North and West India.

potential leader

Prominent leaders of the South included Prahlad Joshi, L. Murugan, G. Kishan Reddy, K. Annamalai, K. Eshwarappa, and Nirmala Sitharaman. There is a possibility that one of these leaders may be elected as the new president.

JP Nadda's tenure

The tenure of current BJP President JP Nadda ended in January this year, but it was extended till June. The organizational elections required to elect a new president take 6 months, due to which Nadda's tenure was extended.

election process

To complete the process of electing the National President, BJP appointed Parliamentary Board member K. Laxman has been made in-charge. The general membership drive has already been completed, and the process of making active members is also about to end this month.

According to the BJP constitution, the election of the National President is possible when the organizational elections of 50% of the states are completed.

representation in leadership

A senior BJP leader said the party's parliamentary board will consider a suitable person. The priority of the Modi government is to provide representation from all parts of the country. Currently, the current President is from East India, the Vice President is from the West, and the Prime Minister is elected from North India. In such a situation, there is a high possibility of a leader from South India being made the national president.

election tradition

Till now the election of the National President in BJP has been held unopposed. However, controversy arose over Nitin Gadkari's re-election in 2013, when Yashwant Sinha filed his nomination. But ultimately Gadkari showed reluctance and Rajnath Singh was elected president.
