The Indian Meteorological Department on Wednesday announced that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclone 'Dana'.

The Indian Meteorological Department on Wednesday announced that the deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into cyclone 'Dana'. It may develop into a tropical cyclone before reaching Puri in Odisha and Sagar Island in West Bengal on October 25 with winds reaching speeds of up to 120 km per hour.

“The deep depression formed yesterday over east-central Bay of Bengal moved west-northwestwards at a speed of 18 kmph in the last six hours and intensified into Cyclonic Storm 'Dana',” the national weather agency said in a bulletin. Today, due to the storm, the weather is very bad in Odisha, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka. According to the information, the storm is in the Bay of Bengal. It is likely to hit the coast of Puri in Odisha tomorrow morning on 24th October.

Preparations in Odisha regarding cyclone Dana

1-Orissa Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has said that the state government is fully prepared to deal with any challenge arising from Cyclone Dana.

2-The government has prepared a plan for complete evacuation of sensitive areas, in which teams of NDRF, ODRAF and fire services have been kept ready.

3-Three districts like Kendrapara, Balasore and Bhadrak are expected to be most affected by the cyclone.

4-Energy grids and emergency transmission towers are being closely monitored in the districts affected by Cyclone Dana.

5-All necessary supplies and essential items will be made available in cyclone shelters.

6-IMD has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall of 7 to 20 cm and extremely heavy rainfall of more than 20 cm with thunderstorms and lightning over Puri, Khurda, Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur districts on October 24.

7-Special Relief Commissioner D.K. Singh has directed the School and Mass Education Department to close schools in the 14 affected districts from October 23 to 25 as a precautionary measure.

8-The weather department has predicted heavy rain in the coastal districts of West Bengal, Purva and Paschim Medinipur as well as North and South 24 Parganas on October 23.
