Gangs target UN helicopter in Haiti, heavy firing

Port au Prince: A UN helicopter was targeted during fighting between gangs in Haiti. At the time of the incident the helicopter was preparing to land in Port-au-Prince. This is the latest case of violence in the capital amid increasing violent incidents in the country.

According to a UN source, no one was injured in the incident. During this, several rounds of bullets were fired targeting the helicopter. He said that there were three crew members and 15 passengers on board the helicopter, however, the helicopter landed safely on the ground.

50 gang suspects killed

The attack comes five months after Haiti's main international airport reopened following gang attacks. The violence has spread to surrounding areas including Arkahei. Fifty suspected gang members were killed in attacks this week in Arkahei, northwest of the capital. The dead included at least 12 gunmen who drowned when their boat capsized, a government official said Thursday.

According to a report released on Thursday by the United Nations' International Organization for Migration, these attacks have displaced more than 10,000 people in the capital in just a week.
