According to The Straits Timesphotos of Lim wearing the national costume prepared for the 2024 Miss Universe competition were shared on Instagram. Drawing inspiration from the Pahang Malay folktale of the warrior princess Walinong Sari, the outfit features traditional handwoven songket fabric. Weighing approximately 30 kg and standing at 1.77 meters tall, the costume is made from locally sourced fabrics and adorned with intricate perforated embroidery embroidery, highlighting the craftsmanship of Malaysian artisans.

Designed to allow Lim an on-stage transformation from princess to warrior, the costume aims to blend elegance with strength, paying tribute to the legendary Walinong Sari while incorporating a modern twist.

While some users in the comment section praised the costume for its cultural significance, others questioned its simplicity.

“Very nice, but looks so simple,” one Instagram user commented.

Another netizen applauded the costume’s fierce appearance, noting its suitability for Lim, who is an experienced wushu practitioner: “Approved! Maybe she can show off her martial arts moves in this design at the finals.”

However, some expressed doubts about whether the outfit would be eye-catching enough to win the “Best National Costume” award at the pageant.

In response to the feedback, Bon Zainal Harun, founder of the Malaysian Bumiputra Designer Association, emphasized that traditional fabrics are a powerful way to represent Malaysia on the global stage.

“In order for people to listen, you don’t have to shout… just a whisper is enough,” he remarked.

Fashion stylist Mughni Che Din also appreciated the costume’s concept, describing it as a “refreshing interpretation of Puteri Walinong Sari.” He suggested enhancing the design with more vibrant colors.

During a press conference on October 23, Lim shared her experience working closely with designer Ezuwan Ismail to develop the costume.

“When I first put it on, I felt so fierce, strong, and powerful,” Lim said.

Lim, 23, is a model and host who has appeared in films such as “Happy Dragons,” “Modern Dynasty 2: War of Others,” and the TVB series “The Heir to the Throne,” according to Malay Mail.

The 2024 Miss Universe pageant will be held on November 16 in Mexico.
