Since the start of the year 2000, India have lost only three home Test series! That is three Test series losses at home in 24 years! This reflects on India’s utter dominance in home series in the longest format.
Often visiting teams have been left befuddled with the spin magic of bowlers like Harbhajan Singh, Anil Kumble, and then R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja. Ashwin and Jadeja have been instrumental in India’s home success over the past 11 years, during which India have not lost a single home Test series and won all 18 Test series in this period.
However, that is set to change as New Zealand are inching toward a maiden Test series win on Indian soil. After winning the Bengaluru Test, they are well placed to seal the Pune Test match as well.
When did India last lose a home Test series?
India’s last home Test series loss came in 2012 against Alastair Cook’s England team, when they lost the four-Test series by 2-1. In the last 11 years, India have made a streak of 18 consecutive home Test series victories.
In that 2012 series against England, despite winning the first Test, India lost the next two, and the last Test was drawn. For England, their heroes were Cook, Kevin Pietersen, Graeme Swann, and Monty Panesar.
India won the first Test in Ahmedabad by 9 wickets. But England recorded victories in Mumbai and Kolkata by 10 wickets and 7 wickets, respectively. The Nagpur Test ended in a draw.
Cook was the leading run-scorer of the series with 562 runs, and Pietersen was the third-highest with 338 runs. With the ball, Swann and Panesar shared 37 wickets between them.
This 18-series winning streak is all but certain to be snapped by New Zealand. In the ongoing Pune Test, by stumps on day 2, they have a lead of 301 runs in their second innings and still five wickets in hand. India were earlier bowled out for only 156 runs in their first innings in reply to New Zealand’s first innings total of 259.
