Shreyas Iyer trying to make a mark for the Border Gavaskar trophy selection, Check inside what the Indian batter said

The Test series squad announcement for Australia tour of India later this month is anticipated from the Ajit Agarkar headed selection committee. With the domestic season now in full swing, many players who have fallen out of favour are making a case and that includes Shreyas Iyer. The Mumbai batter had recently made a stunning comeback to cricket after scoring a blistering hundred against Maharashtra that saw his side home. And oh how he hopes when given the chance to represent the country in Australia; the hope is to make an impact.

The highs and lows have been intense for Iyer in the year 2024. After he was excluded from the Test squad, he lost his BCCI central contract at the age of 29. Nevertheless, in time, he went on a redemptive journey. He took charge of the IPL 2024 title win and vice captained the team for the Sri Lanka ODIs. Now, he has also been active in red-ball cricket domestically, featuring in the Duleep Trophy, Irani Cup, and the current Ranji Trophy.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Iyer talked about his ambitions to play in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy which will take place next.

“From being a little kid from Worli to where I am now as a national cricketer, It has been a great journey to be able to play for the country everywhere that I dreamed about as a kid. It is very competitive and hard to be able to play in and win a Border-Gavaskar trophy series in Australia. The conditions, the competition, the pressure, they all call for everything you have, and these are the times you wish to be in as a cricketer. I’m getting ready to seize that moment and etch my name,” these were Iyer’s words.

The right-handed batsman also denied that he does not appreciate the fact that the competition to get into the Test squad is stiff, but if the chance comes his way, he is ready to take it without wasting time.

“High-pressure situations are those that I enjoy the most. In fact, these are the very challenges that motivate you to extend yourself beyond your capabilities in all formats. I have also been focused on improving my skill set to be ready for every possible function in the game. The competition for places in Indian cricket at this time has been brought to unprecedented heights due to the amount of potential that this country houses. There are more avenues as well for the players now unlike before where they can create an impression and stake their claim before the selectors,” Iyer said.

“You have to be cranky every time you step on the pitch – that is something that I try to attain. When that time comes, I know I will have to be ready to perform because representing this country and performing the best in the sport is the whole point of it, he further continued.
