About 26 percent of the country's elderly, or one in four, is suffering from at least one non-communicable disease.

According to this survey of HelpAge India regarding non-communicable diseases, 54 percent of the elderly have been confirmed to be suffering from more than two non-communicable diseases.

About 26 percent of the country's elderly people, or one in four, are suffering from at least one non-communicable disease, which includes many diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. During the survey, about 20 percent of the elderly people cited lack of information about their illness. According to the survey report, most of the elderly aged 80 years and above were found suffering from two or more non-communicable diseases. For the survey, apart from talking to more than five thousand elderly people in 20 cities of 10 states, information was also taken from 1300 doctors to whom elderly patients are coming for treatment. The study found that in the last one year, most of the elderly (79%) have gone to government hospitals or clinics for treatment, while the rest have sought medical check-up and consultation in private hospitals.

39 percent of elderly people have smart phones

According to the report, 39 percent of the elderly have digital devices other than smartphones, while 59 percent do not have any digital device. Smartphone usage is highest among men (47%) and the youngest age group 60-69 years (43%). About 12% people used the digital medium for paying electricity bills or internet banking and eight per cent used it for some health-related use.
