7 Punjab policemen suspended after Lawrence Bishnoi's jail interview goes viral

Seven Punjab Police personnel, including Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Gursher Sandhu and Samar Vaneet, have been suspended in connection with the going viral of an interview given by gangster Lawrence Bishnoi while he was in jail.

The Punjab Home Affairs Department ordered the suspension following instructions from the Punjab Governor.

The order said, “In pursuance of the orders passed on 21.12.2023, Shri Prabodh Kumar, I.P.S. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed under the leadership of Special Director General of Police, Punjab State Human Rights Commission.

As per reports, on the night of 03-04.09.2022, accused Lawrence Bishnoi, lodged in the context of CIA, Kharar, gave an interview to a shared TV channel through video conference. The SIT report identified several officers for negligence in their duties related to the incident involving gangster Lawrence Bishnoi's jail interview. Those named include DSP Gursher Singh, PPS, of 9th PAP, Amritsar, who was the then DSP (Investigation) at SAS Nagar, and DSP Samar Vaneet, PPS, of the Economic Offenses Wing, SAS Nagar. Besides this, Sub Inspector Reena of CIA in Kharar, Sub Inspectors of Anti Gangster Task Force Jagatpal Jangu and Shaganjit Singh, then duty officer ASI Mukhtiar Singh and then Night MHC head constable of CIA in Kharar Om Prakash were also named for their role in the case. Meanwhile, on Friday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) announced a reward of Rs 10 lakh for the arrest of Anmol Bishnoi, brother of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Anmol has been charged in two NIA cases registered in 2022. Anmol is also wanted in connection with the firing incident that took place outside the residence of Bollywood actor Salman Khan earlier this year.

Authorities are urging anyone with information about Anmol Bishnoi's whereabouts to come forward. He has been associated with various criminal activities and is considered an important figure in organized crime. Authorities believe his arrest could provide vital information about a wider network involved in illegal operations across the region. As the NIA has stepped up its efforts to nab Anmol, officials are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help in arresting him.
