Dhanteras 2024: Dhanteras has special significance in Sanatan Dharma. Diwali festival also starts from the day of Dhanteras. It is also considered very auspicious to buy some special things and bring them home on this day. Most people also buy jewelery like broom, steel utensils, gold and silver on the day of Dhanteras.

According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Dhanteras will be celebrated on 29 October. On the day of Dhanteras, there is a religious belief that Lord Dhanvantari is also worshiped. Dhanvantari was also born on this day. According to the legend, on this day Dhanvantari Dev, the father of Ayurvedic medicine, appeared from the churning of the ocean.

Method of lighting Yama lamp

1. On the day of Dhanteras, there is a tradition of lighting the lamp of Yama.
2. To light the lamp, take a four-sided clay lamp, fit four lights in it and fill it with mustard oil.
3. In the evening during Pradosh period, when all the family members come home, then light the lamp of Yama.
4. Keep the lamp outside the house towards the south direction. After lighting the lamp, move it around the house.

Importance of lighting Yama's lamp

1. According to astrology, the lord of the south direction of the house is Yamraj.
2. There is a mythological belief that Yamraj is pleased by lighting the lamp of Yama in the south direction on Dhanteras.
3. This brings happiness, peace and health in the house. It is believed that this removes the fear of untimely death.
4. Description of Yama's lamp is also found in Skanda Purana and Padma Purana.

On the day of Dhanteras, make a four-faced lamp of flour and fill it with mustard oil, put four wicks in it and light it facing the south direction of the house. Apart from this, by lighting a cow ghee lamp at the main entrance of the house, Goddess Lakshmi becomes happy and bestows a lot of wealth. On the day of Dhanteras, a lamp is lit for Lord Yamraj in the evening after sunset. It is believed that donating lamps pleases Lord Yamdev and protects the family members from untimely death.
