Rohit Sharma supports Ashwin, Jadeja despite poor performances in Test series against New Zealand

Ravichandran Ashwin was named the Player of the Series in the previous Test series against Bangladesh, but he was not at his best against New Zealand. Ravindra Jadeja is also having a torrid time on the field. The below-par performances of the two-star spinners has played a significant role in the Men in Blue’s two consecutive defeats in the three-match Test series against New Zealand.

Rohit Sharma was asked about the failure of the duo, and the Indian captain supported the two, saying that they are allowed a few bad games.

Rohit said that Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja were instrumental in India’s 18 consecutive home Test series wins. Both spinners have taken six wickets each in the New Zealand series.

“It is important for us to win as a team. I can’t call out one or two players for the defeats. They have played a major role in our success over the years and are the reasons behind India’s 18 consecutive series wins at home. I am not going to be harsh just because they had two bad games. They are allowed to have a few bad matches,” Rohit Sharma said.

“If Ash doesn’t bowl well, Jadeja comes into the picture. We expect Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel to do the job if one of their partner is having a bad day,” he added.

Happy for Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar took 11 wickets in the Pune Test, and Rohit Sharma was happy for the all-rounder. “I am happy with his performance. He bowled well in the game. You can’t expect Ashwin and Jadeja to deliver in every match. I can happen to anyone in the sport.”

India are still leading the World Test Championship (WTC) standings, but its lead has taken a big hit. India will have to perform well in the remaining six Tests to stand a chance to play in the final.
