While in North India the festival of Diwali is celebrated by lighting lamps to celebrate the return of Ram and Sita after 14 years of exile, in Tamil Nadu this festival is celebrated to celebrate the killing of Narakasura by Shri Krishna. In North India, this festival is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month, but in South India, the festival of Diwali starts from Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha. On that day, people take bath by applying oil and paste early in the morning before sunrise, because the next day is Amavasya and one cannot take bath by applying oil on the head on that day. Thus, for Tamil people the Diwali celebration begins with an early morning oil bath.

In most of the states of India, new clothes are worn on Diwali, but in Tamil Nadu, whether a person is poor or rich, he buys new clothes according to his status. For this festival, after taking bath the traditional new clothes purchased are kept in front of the Lord at night. Next morning i.e. on the festival day, the head of the house gives this garment to everyone with his own hands as a blessing. All the family members happily wear these clothes and bow to the elders and seek their blessings. There is still a tradition of prostration in Tamil Nadu and if someone is a Brahmin then he does prostration by chanting Gayatri Mantra, which they have maintained till now.

Those who are newly married couples and whose first Diwali is celebrated is called Thalai Diwali (First Diwali). For this, the husband comes to his in-laws' house with his wife a day before and both celebrate Diwali. Some time ago the boy's entire family used to come to his in-laws' house and participate in this festival. The boy's family brings new clothes for everyone. Usually on the first Diwali they buy a saree for the daughter-in-law. Apart from this, the girl also gets a saree from her husband. After this, firecrackers are burst and earthen lamps are lit at night.

On the eve of Rak Chaturthi, women prepare a special medicine called 'Marundu'. It contains black pepper, cinnamon, black cumin, pippali, liquorice and many other herbs and is cooked in jaggery syrup after grinding and filtering. A lot of ghee, spleen oil etc. is added to it. It is believed that eating various dishes during the festival does not spoil the health, hence this medicine is given beforehand, which is a digestive. After this, pre-prepared sweets and dishes are placed in front of the Lord. On this day everyone goes to the neighborhood and asks 'Have you taken a bath in the Ganga?' Early in the morning they go to the relatives' house and in the afternoon, various types of delicious dishes like rice, sambar, rasam, payasam, three-four types of vegetables, raita, medu vada etc. are prepared and papads are fried. In this way a completely traditional meal is prepared, the exchange of which continues for several days.
