Delhi Pollution: Big step towards pollution control in Delhi, 10 thousand civil defense volunteers deployed

New Delhi : The Delhi government has decided to redeploy 10,000 civil defense volunteers to reduce rising pollution levels in the city. These volunteers were sacked in November last year while working as 'bus marshals'. Chief Minister Atishi gave information about this in a press conference on Monday, October 28.

Atishi said a decision has been taken to re-induct the dismissed bus marshals and volunteers to help in pollution control efforts. They will be deployed in collaboration with various agencies like Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and Transport Department. The volunteers will assist in public transport management to ensure compliance with pollution control measures, monitor vehicle emissions and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

The Chief Minister said that these volunteers will be deployed in 13 areas sensitive from pollution point of view and other highly polluted areas. Besides this, they will also assist in the inspection of 1,000 pollution control (PUC) centres, to prevent any irregularities.

Atishi said the registration of civil defense volunteers would be done next week, after which they would be deployed on duty for a period of four months. In the recent meeting of Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), it was decided that these volunteers will play a vital role in the implementation of various anti-pollution measures.

However, politics has also become heated regarding this decision. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that all the bus marshals were removed as part of a 'conspiracy' by the BJP. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on the other hand, said the reappointment was on their demand, and alleged that Atishi was only trying to take credit. The BJP also said that Arvind Kejriwal's government had appointed volunteers without following administrative procedures.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai considered this re-appointment as a positive step and said that it will help in reducing the pollution level in Delhi. Thus, the withdrawal of civil defense volunteers is being seen as an important effort by the Delhi government towards pollution control.
