Thai woman in Singapore jailed for $24M luxury goods scam targeting 200 victims
A Thai woman was sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Singaporean court for scamming around 200 individuals by offering luxury goods that were never delivered.
Pansuk Siriwipa, 30, received the sentence on Tuesday after pleading guilty to 30 charges, including fraudulent trading and money laundering, on Oct. 21, according to The Straits Times. Siriwipa and her Singaporean husband, 29-year-old Pi Jiapeng, were accused of defrauding customers through their companies, Tradenation and Tradeluxury.
The scam, which came to light in 2022, involved collecting payments for luxury items such as bags and watches, totaling over S$32 million (US$24.2 million).
Despite receiving full payments, the couple failed to fulfill the orders.
Authorities received several complaints from May to August 2022, sparking investigations into the firms’ fraudulent activities, Channel News Asia reported.
Judge Christopher Goh, who presided over the case, noted that although the couple’s businesses were operating at a loss, they continued to fund an extravagant lifestyle using customers’ payments. Their expenditures included purchasing a S$2.3 million house, taking a private jet flight worth S$58,000 and acquiring a luxury car, Goh said as cited by The Straits Times.
