Four Indian female boxers reached the finals in their respective weight categories at the U19 World Boxing Championships in Colorado, USA, on Tuesday night.
The Indian athletes who secured places in the gold medal matches scheduled for October 29 are Anjali Kumari, Chanhal Chaudhary, Krisha Verma, and Vini.
In the female categories, India now have seven potential gold medallists, with Vanshka Goswami (80+), Kritika Wasan (80) and Akansha Phalaswal (70) the other three girls to have reached the final.
Anjali, continuing her blazing form, delivered another stunning performance to seal her spot in the female 57kg final with a commanding 5-0 victory over Japan’s Okayama Sakura. Chanhal Chaudhary also advanced to the final in the female 48kg category after defeating Australia’s Anderton Leah 5-0.
India’s dominance in the tournament continued with Krisha Verma, who, competing in the female 75kg category, reached the final with a close 3-2 win over New Zealand’s Nikah Perez. Vini, meanwhile, secured a place in the gold medal bout by defeating Australia’s Storch Ciara 4-1.
In the male category, Krrish Pal confirmed India’s sixth medal by reaching the semifinal with a victory over Joseph Turner of England via a Referee Stops Contest (RSC) decision in the 55kg category. Earlier, Rishi Singh (50kg), Sumit (70kg), Rahul (75kg), Aryan (85kg), and Hemant Sangwan (90kg) had also reached the semifinals in their respective categories.
However, Lakshay Rathi narrowly missed out, losing 2-3 to England’s Atang Leo in the male 90+kg quarterfinal and won the bronze medal. It was India’s seventh medal in the male boxing.
With 17 medals already confirmed, Indian youth boxers have set an impressive standard at the event. Several other Indian athletes will compete in semifinal bouts on Wednesday night, raising the nation’s hopes for more gold medal opportunities in both the male and female categories.
