De Jorji, Stubbs and Mulder equal rare record in South Africa's mammoth score
Chittagong, October 30 (IANS). All-rounder Wian Mulder hit a brilliant century and in the process helped South Africa equal a unique record – the first time in 75 years that three batsmen scored their maiden Test centuries in the same Test – as the visitors defeated Bangladesh on Wednesday. Strengthened its hold in the second test against.
Mulder scored an unbeaten 105 off 150 balls on the second day of the match and became the third South African batsman to reach three figures in the match, joining Tony de Jorzi (177) and Tristan Stubbs (106), helping the visitors win their first innings. Declared at a huge score of 573/6.
De Zorzi, Stubbs and Mulder scored their first centuries in their fifth, eighth and sixteenth Tests respectively, a rare occurrence as this has happened only the second time.
The first time this happened was in November 1948, when West Indies toured India. In the first match of the series in Delhi, they scored 631 runs in the first innings thanks to centuries from Clyde Walcott (152), Gerry Gomez (101), Everton Weekes (128) and Robert Christiani (107). Walcott, Gomez and Christiani scored their first centuries in Test cricket, while it was Weekes's second century.
On Wednesday, South Africa restricted Bangladesh to 38/4 in nine overs in their first innings, with Kagiso Rabada taking 2-8 in the first over. Dane Patterson and Keshav Maharaj took one wicket each for 15 and four runs respectively, putting the hosts in trouble early on.
Earlier, playing on from their yesterday's score of 307/2, De Zorzi and David Bedingham continued to add runs quickly to South Africa's score. De Zorzi scored 150 off 235 balls, while Bedingham reached his half-century off 70 balls, adding 116 runs for the third wicket. Bedingham was dismissed by Taijul Islam for 59 and De Zorji was also out soon after, he was LBW by Taijul for 177 off 269 balls, his innings comprising 12 fours and four sixes.
South Africa lost two wickets early on, but Wiaan Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy (68 not out) made an unbeaten partnership of 152 runs for the seventh wicket, taking South Africa to a huge score.
With early shock from their bowlers, Aiden Markram's side are in a very good position to clean sweep the two-Test series after winning the first Test in Mirpur by seven wickets.
Brief Score:
South Africa 575/6 declared (Tony De Jorzi 177, Tristan Stubbs 106, David Bedingham 59, Kyle Verrein 105 not out, Senuran Muthusamy 68 not out; Taijul Islam 5-198), Bangladesh 38/4 in 9 overs (Mahmudul Hasan Joy 10; Kagiso Rabada 2-8)
