Mansi wins bronze, Manisha misses out
Mansi Ahlawat clinched India’s first medal at the Senior World Championships 2024 by winning a bronze medal in women’s 59 Kg freestyle wrestling at Tirana, Albania on Wednesday.
With this, she has now won a medal at the world championships of all the age group categories: Senior (Bronze 2024), U23 (Bronze 2022), U20 (Bronze 2018), and U17 (Silver 2016).
She confirmed her maiden senior world medal with a solid 5-0 victory against Pan-American champion, Laurence Beauregard of Canada in the bronze medal match.
Mansi has been a very consistent wrestler for India and was very close to winning a medal at the Asian Games, but eventually lost her bronze medal match. She also represented India at the Olympic qualifier earlier this year.
On the other hand, three-time Asian medalist Manisha Bhanwala (65 kg) had a heartbreaking result, losing 2-8 against the former world champion Miwa Morikawa of Japan in the bronze medal match.
Earlier, the 19-year-old Kirti (55 Kg) lost her bout by pinfall in the repechage round 2 against France’s Tatiana Debian, ending her journey at the debut world championships event.
Sandeep Mann into Repechage
Sandeep Mann is the lone Indian men’s freestyle wrestler who is in contention for a medal at these championships as he progressed to the repechage round of men’s 92 Kg, which is scheduled for Thursday.
Sandeep lost his pre-quarterfinal match to Miriani Maisuradze of Georgia on technical superiority (0-10) but still got the chance to compete further as Miriani reached the final of the competition.
He will take on Batyrbek Tsakulov of Slovakia in the repechage round and the winner of the match will fight for a bronze medal against the Italian wrestler, Ben Honis.
On the other hand, India’s biggest medal hope, Udit (61 Kg) lost his pre-quarterfinal (2-4) bout to the reigning champion Vito Arujau of the USA after a very intense battle.
Meanwhile, Manish Goswami (70 Kg) and Parvinder Singh (79 Kg) also exited from the competition in earlier rounds, losing to Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan wrestlers respectively.
