Sandeep Mann exits, no medal in men’s Freestyle
Indian campaign at the 2024 World Wrestling Championships ended with one medal as Indian men’s freestyle wrestlers went medalless after the exit of Sandeep Mann in the repechage round on Thursday.
Sandeep was the lone Indian wrestler on the final day of the competition but he had a forgettable outing and conceded a dreadful loss on technical superiority against the Slovakian wrestler, Batyrbek Tsakulov.
Back-to-back medalless campaign in men’s freestyle
This is the second consecutive World Wrestling Championships where Indian men’s freestyle wrestlers have failed to win a medal as the last medal for India came in 2022 when Bajrang won the bronze medal.
Earlier, Sandeep had a good start to the tournament on Wednesday, winning his first-round match comfortably (8-0) against the home-favourite Marjus Malko of Albania.
However, he could not take this forward and lost the next bout against second-seeded Miriani Maisuradze of Georgia in the pre-quarterfinal stage.
Manisha Ahlawat is the only Indian wrestler who has medalled for India at this edition of the World Championships, which only had events from all the non-Olympic weight classes.
She won a bronze medal in the 59 kg women’s freestyle category on Wednesday and repeated the performance from the last edition of these championships in 2023 where Antim Panghal (53 Kg) was the lone medalist for India.
